The AI revolution isn’t just merely transforming how and where we work, rather it’s altering what we even believe is possible. From ChatGPT rewriting text in seconds to AI copilots writing apps or making decisions, the digital world has been forever modified. Underlying this transformation are the machines that are making it all happen.
While Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) have had top promotion throughout the AI boom, there’s increasing chatter about the next big thing. It is believed to be quantum computing, along with a new name in town, Rigetti Computing. In the dynamic universe of AI, investors are now paying close attention as quantum computing steps up, promising incredible processing power.
Nvidia is the acknowledged king in this field. Unlike CPUs, which can process tasks sequentially, GPUs simultaneously take on countless operations. This marks Nvidia’s specialty in most cases as being optimal with AI’s data-hungry capability. Today, over 90% of the data center GPU market belongs to Nvidia, which is impossible to switch away from the CUDA ecosystem built around it.
In the future, Nvidia will only continue to widen its dominance. Forecasters anticipate that its top line and earnings per share (EPS) will grow at a CAGR of 31% and 29% from fiscal years 2025 to 2028. With its new Blackwell GPUs already 2.5x faster than the present Hopper chips and with a relaxing hold on Chinese export controls, Nvidia has several growth drivers in its favor. Even with a $4.2 trillion market capitalization and a 42x forward earnings valuation, it still appears fairly valued given its size, performance, and predictability in the AI industry.
On the other hand, Rigetti Computing is more speculative and possibly on a steeper growth slope. Rigetti creates quantum processing units (QPUs) that can store and process information in a manner traditional chips can’t. With non-modular and modular QPUs, in-house quantum systems and a cloud platform, it has an end-to-end quantum computing ecosystem. Its current product strategy is ambitious, it includes a 9-qubit chip, the 84-qubit Ankaa 3 system, and a 36-qubit modular system that will soon be launched, with a 100-qubit non-modular monster next year in the works.
The firm also works with Nvidia to design hybrid QPU-GPU platforms, which is an enticing move towards fusing classical and quantum processing for AI. However, Rigetti’s offerings aren’t nearly as powerful as IBM’s 127-qubit offerings, and its market is extremely niche. Even with a projected revenue CAGR of 52% to 2027, Rigetti is set to be unprofitable for this period. Its $5 billion valuation already implies 133x its sales in 2027, which might mean that investors are far too ahead of the firm’s true financial developments.
The AI Reality
Both firms provide a window into alternative futures. Nvidia is the humble, near-term revenue generating powerhouse of the AI universe. Rigetti provides a liftoff into a developing territory that is promising, but very much theoretical in scale. Quantum computing will perhaps revolutionize AI workloads one day, but today’s workloads execute on Nvidia, and probably will for the next few years.
Rigetti’s story is compelling, its share price momentum has been exhilarating, and its quantum breakthrough is impressive. Nvidia is still an organized behemoth, expanding at a healthy rate, and priced at multiples that are though premium, but are reasonable in the context of its dominant market position. Nvidia is and will remain the more intelligent and safer purchase for those who want exposure to this impressive, growing market, as it is reliable and profitable.
On the other hand, Rigetti’s quantum technology is intriguing but still untested at commercial scale. What’s worrisome isn’t the fact that it’s not profitable, rather it’s how the market values the company currently, which appears to be driven more by passion than facts.
Investing in Nvidia today isn’t just a safe play, it’s a smart one. Nvidia has locked in the scale and ecosystem along with its roadmap to lead and define the AI era. Rigetti deserves to be monitored due to its long-term attractiveness, but presently to invest in it is like trying to stake one’s residence on a house under construction. The buzz is thrilling, but for investors who would rather take compound growth than complete chaos, Nvidia is hands down the best AI stock to buy.
