Toyota Tests the Use of Electric Cars as Blackout Backup Power for Homes

Toyota disciples the traditional paradigm of electric vehicles by testing them as economic savers who can provide power to residential homes in case of power interruptions in the electricity network. 

According to the Department of Energy, it is projected there will be 30 million to 42 million light-duty plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) on the road by 2030 and zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) sales for medium to heavy-duty (MHD) could be 42% of all MHD trucks by the same year.

Real‑World Trials

Toyota has a Japanese-market bZ4X at its Plano, Texas headquarters, fitted with Fermata Energy bidirectional charger, which cooperates with the utility Oncor. 

Smart software measures the stress and tariff changes in a grid, allowing the charging of the grid in an off-peak tariff and the charging off in peak hours or disconnection. 

This vehicle-to-home setup utilizes EVs as mobile batteries and thereby reduces transformer overloads that plague deteriorating U.S. infrastructure.

Grid Strain Statistics

In the January Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its initial energy-sector projections through 2027. The EIA projects that US electricity consumption will increase by 1% this year and 3% in 2027. 

This increase would be the strongest four-year growth period since 2000 and the first time since 2007 that power demand has increased for four consecutive years. The quantitative analysis of Toyota shows that 4 million American EVs will be able to store 40,000 mega watts.

For comparison, the Nuclear Energy Institute states that there are 94 nuclear reactors in the United States. In 2023, they produced 18.2% of the electricity.

The successes observed in this situation transform the idea of electric cars as a type of energy insurance, with risk of outage essentially reduced positively with reference to a growth in demand a year because of artificial-intelligence data centers. 

The point about battery degradation is voiced by critics, though empirical evidence provided by Toyota proves that it is reduced less than twice a year.
