French Police Raid Elon Musk’s X Offices in Paris Over Algorithm Concerns

The French police searched the X offices of Elon Musk in Paris, thus putting the billionaire in a controversial spotlight over his handling of algorithms and artificial intelligence.

The move highlights a longstanding conflict between the regulatory institutions of Europe and U.S. technology conglomerates, introducing a year of investigation, now making the Grok chatbot by Musk part of the case.

Raid Details

On 3 February, 2026, the cybercrime division of the prosecutor’s office in Paris made a raid in the French headquarters of X that was aided by the national police forces and another organization called Europol.

This step is associated with summons of Musk and former chief executive Linda Yaccarino as April 20, and other members of the staff.

The prosecutors described the operation as a constructive step aimed at enforcing the French law regarding platforms that have local presence, yet the legal enforceability of such summons on non-residents is a complicated subject.

Probe Background

In January 2025, the investigation was initiated after a complaint was made by a Member of Parliament, Eric Bothorel, against the algorithms created by X on allegations that it was biased and thus it was skewing automated data systems.

These were enhanced by the accusations of decreased voice variety in the content of the platforms, as well as by the personal readjustments of the algorithms by Musk.

In more recent times, the inquiry has also been extended to Grok, the artificial-intelligence system at X, over claims of facilitation of circulation of child-pornographic content, as well as sexually explicit Deepfakes, which violate Image-rights laws.

Critics have pointed out how Grok is created to produce content of an antisemitic nature and sexually dehumanizing Deepfakes even when mutual mitigation measures are introduced, worsening the views of the Europeans against the unregulated use of AI.

Looking Ahead

The result of the future proceedings, which is planned to occur in April, may involve the dismissal of the charges, starting of custody proceedings, or penalty.

Since Musk has been re-elected to a senior U.S. leadership role, a backlash is expected with potential to cause trade wars or have X pulled out of European markets, thus redefining the global debate on free speech.
