The State of Play by PlayStation that happened on 12th February, 2026 was a considerable input of new content exceeding 60 minutes in its duration and surpassing normal expectations in a packed show. Simultaneously aired on YouTube and Twitch, it was used to emphasize the aggressive promotion of the 2026 console generation by Sony.
The sales of the PS5 were over 8.1 million units Q3 of fiscal year 2025. By the end of fiscal year 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that the PlayStation 5 had sold 24.8 million units worldwide, exceeding all expectations and capturing a commanding 47.4% share of the dedicated home console market.
God of War Shocks
The proceedings were dominated by Santa Monica Studio with two big announcements. To begin with, there is early development of a remaster of the original God of War Greek trilogy, which could potentially have the effect of re-energizing the core concepts of the series in the modern day. Second, the game God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2D platformer, co-developed with Mega Cat Studios was also announced on the same day as it came to PS5 integrating bloody combat with nostalgic side-scrolling.
Release Blitz
A font of content was provided by third-party developers who had a number of high-profile titles. On May 27, IO Interactive pre-released the promotional trailer of 007 First Light, and Bungie was set to release its entirely original game, Marathon, on March 5 following a beta called Server Slam on February 26.
The presentation came up with a concentrated list of the release dates, which included: Resident Evil Requiem on February 27, Octopus Darwin on April 2, Saros on April 30, Kena: Scars of Kosmora on 2026, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls on August 6.
On the first day of the release of the Big Walk, PlayStation + celebrated the release of the game and reintroduced classic games in March, including Tekken: Dark Resurrection.
Market Momentum
Analysts argue that this launch of more than twenty titles has a direct reverse impact on the Xbox strategy of Microsoft, and thus, supports the domination of the PS5 in the middle of the year. This is especially timely when the next generation exclusive, e.g. Marathon, may add some growth in hardware sales, as industry projections suggest.
The key connotation in the debate is that both strategies of Sony: taking part in the God of war remake craze and launching live-service betas can achieve a return to the series and at the same time test the new models of monetization. For comparison, the most successful game of the classical “Greek Era” was God of War III, which (including the remaster) sold 10.8 million copies.
The first two installments of the series, which became cult classics on the PlayStation 2, sold 4.6 million and 4.2 million copies, respectively. The expected results are continuity in the interest of the entire summer season hence the leadership of Sony in the market.
