Anthropic Refuses Pentagon’s AI Weapons Demand Amid Military Escalation

Anthropic has taken a very aggressive approach towards the Pentagon, and it has launched a heated debate on the use of artificial intelligence in war. 

The firm refused to cancel the measures that limit its technology to take part in the autonomous weapons systems and domestic spyware despite a formal ultimatum sent to it by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Tense Showdown Unfolds

Anthropic Chief Executive Officer, Dario Amodei, met with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Washington to discuss a conflict that had been swirling for a few months. Sources cite that Hegseth threatened Anthropic, that it would be categorized as a “supply-chain threat, as long as it did not comply. 

The Pentagon has continued to uphold that the U.S law is adequate and the rigid barriers to ethics of the firm are moved aside. Anthropic resisted, and its focus was on precautions at the time when the hostility towards AI militarization grew.

This Confrontation Reflects On Larger Tensions

Claude models in Q1 2026 report made $2.5 billion in revenue and doubled since the start of the year. Meanwhile, the AI defense budget of the U.S. had increased to $1.8 billion in the coming FY2026 according to Department of Defense submissions, creating pressures of unhindered access.

Similarly, the Army has requested a total IT budget of $16.7 billion for fiscal 2026, which is a decrease of $431 million, or 2.5 % from 2025. AI is their top priority, while force training is anticipated to see the largest spending decrease from 2025. The Army’s largest IT spending increases are: $507 million or 38.3 % increase for AI

Critical Outlook Ahead

The non-compliance of Anthropic may give rise to the Defense Production Act that initiated changes of policy and a possible lawsuit. A mixed-bag regulation is expected as most of the AI startups are now under similar scrutiny.

Importantly, this situation is a challenge to the effectiveness of voluntary controls in the face of geopolitical pressure- possibly remaking the place of AI in the U.S-China conflict. By the end of this week, the response given by Anthropic can re-establish the connection between the technology and the military affairs.
