The massive game file sizes and strict memory limits are causing storage management problems for Nintendo Switch 2 users.
The Crisis Unfolds
Introduced in June 2025, the Switch 2 has a nominal internal capacity of 256GB, or around eight times the amount on the original device, but with operating-system fragmentation of 7GB, the real user available capacity has been increased to 249GB. Modern-day titles are however very storage-intensive: as an example, the game, which seemingly is a physical-only game called, in all ways, Mario Kart World, takes 24 GB to download, another game called Donkey Kong Bananza takes over 50 GB, and the third-party-titles game, known as Cyberpunk 2077, requires a download of 59 GB even though it should be a physical-only game.
Now sold to 17.37 million units in February, the console, which is expected to sell 19 million units within the present fiscal year, is a major source of storage-related frustrations among consumers.
AI Boom Fuels the Fire
One of the main factors is the growth of workloads of artificial-intelligence. Microsoft and Google might make demands on data-centers, purchasing DRAM and NAND flash, which has increased the cost of 12GB of Switch 2 RAM and storage by 41 percent and 8 percent, respectively. According to the Japanese retailers, high-capacity microSD’s 512GB to 2TB are quickly running out because they are diverted into powering the AI servers.
As a result, the Switch 2 has tethered the relatively high-priced option of microSD Express cards, which may support up to 2 terabytes, which has created a market effect of a 256 GB set-up costing around $60 now, with these cards ready to sell, as the market has become filled with over 95% of the dealers liquidating inventory. Supply is unable to keep up with the AI Supercycle, thus stressing consumer material choices, as Sanjay Mehrota of Micron has noted.
User Pain Points
There is increased dissatisfaction in online forums. For example, a single user filled nearly all the storage by installing only five large titles. This required erasing old backups and installing new patches. Sales data show the size of this problem. In seven months, 4.4 million units have been sold in the United States. This drives demand for scarce media expansion.
Looking Ahead
Nintendo will be faced with a threat of margin compression, a factor that can lead the company to increase pricing or reduce specifications as Samsung and SK Hynix increase the number of DRAM in the next few years. Insiders are encouraged to buy microSD Express media as soon as possible, prioritize those cartridges that are made of physical media and avoid the use of digital downloads and watch out for new releases that could include smaller cartridges.
By the end of 2026, the scenario of reducing the assets of AI will alleviate the issues in supply; still, the challenges are expected to remain despite the date, which is why the careful management of the hybrid platform can preserve its sustainability.
