It is long overdue but Mina the Hollower will finally be released on 31st October 2025. This is excellent news followed by the launch of the latest Nintendo Indie World showcase by Yacht Club Games, the folks behind the success story of Shovel Knight.
The game will also appear on the current Nintendo switch as well as the upcoming switch 2 so that fans on both systems will have something to look forward to together with the announcement a free demo is also released so players could try it even before it releases and the demo progress will be transferred to the final one.
Modern Polish into the Past Retro-Inspired
Mina the Hollow introduces a lot of retro-inspiration more explicitly based on classic Zelda games such as the Oracle series rather than Link, gamers play as Mina a courageous mouse who is set upon investigating creepy castles and fighting terrifying creatures.
It is played in pixel art and has frantic battles and old-school adventure features. Mina goes into battle with a whip and a variety of sidearms and hides in the ground to avoid traps and reveal secrets. The game is a top-down action game that mixes the looks and feel of the adventures of the Game Boy Colour era with the more modern fluidity of control.
The musical style and art form maintain a retro sense but there is nothing rough about the look and feel making it attractive to the older fans and the new players.
Fans respond with bated breath and a few queries
The reaction of the community has been largely positive. The game started as a Kickstarter in 2022 and has garnered a lot of fans including people who are excited to have a concrete release date. It is reckoned as one of the most demanded features and fans did not hesitate to download and play the free demo.
The comments express positive reactions with intense eagerness praising the visual style and game play but some had doubts concerning the switch 2 model. Some players stated that a game like Mina the Hollower might instead not require the boosted gaming power delivered by a newer console; other players pointed out that the increased frame rate to an alleged 120fps is the kind of boost they welcome. This translates to the fact that although this game runs smoothly on the existing switch those using switch 2 will enjoy smoother effects.
Great Beginnings to Indie World Showcase
It was a good idea to release Mina the Hollower at the beginning of the Indie World showcase. It captured the attention and framed the expectations high for the following parts of the event, even some fans said this Indie showcase was more exciting than the recent main Nintendo Direct.
Its use of a gothic setting and a rodent protagonist was also enough to remind some players of Castlevania and even The Secret of NIMH people were passionate about loving Yacht Club Games with lots of commenters describing the studio as the Indie royalty and having absolute trust in how good the game would be.
The Hope and Final Words of Physical Release
Although the digital release is scheduled in October there are still a number of fans hoping that they will do a physical copy soon. There are some Kickstarter backers who said they have been waiting on their physical copies.
Mina the Hollower seems to become a good title in the indie game scene in 2017, provided the demo is anything to judge by, this one should be followed closely by those who like the retro-style action games played on switch or switch 2 this creepy game is plausibly worth your time.
