Wordle is a deceptively simple yet endlessly entertaining game where players guess a five-letter word in six tries or fewer. It exploded onto the scene in 2021, created by Josh Wardle as a personal project before being scooped up by The New York Times in early 2022.
Since then, it’s become a part of millions of people’s morning rituals. In fact, Wordle was played more than 5.3 billion times in 2024 alone, cementing its spot as the world’s favourite daily word challenge.
Start with any five letter word. Green tiles mean the letter is in the correct spot. Yellow means it’s in the word but in the wrong place. Gray means that letter isn’t in the word at all. You’ve got six guesses total, and that’s all the room you get to solve the day’s puzzle.
Wordle refreshes each day at midnight in your local timezone. You can also track your streak, win percentage, and guess distribution if you’re logged in through a New York Times account. It’s free to play on the NYT website and app, and you can even challenge yourself on platforms like Meta Quest and Discord.
