Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game, built by Weta Workshop , tries to experience something new, but it seems to have fired back. As the game fails to stand up to the expectations made on the basis of previous releases. In an attempt to paint the unhurried charm of hobbit domesticity, but ultimately delivers a shallow experience that fails both Tolkien fans and cosy gaming enthusiasts.
Despite a promising premise of peaceful village life in Middle-earth, the game’s execution falls dramatically short of its ambitious vision.
To give you an idea of the gameplay, the player inherits a hole in a place named Bywater from a deceased elderly resident. Now you set out on the journey of renovating the wretched home and integrating in the surrounding community.
Perhaps, in this process, the most profound step is, when you invite the former owner’s students to create new memories in a grief-tinged space. The central goal of transforming Bywater into an officially recognized village through cooking, farming, and completing “Tales” sounds delightful in concept but suffers from repetitive execution.
The effort to relocate the characters of Gandalf and Rosie Cotton within everyday village scenarios, with brief appearances that hint at deeper connections to Tolkien’s world.
Yet, all of this fails to capture and connect to the emotional depth of the player. It feels like an undercooked arrangement that lacks the warmth and complexity that should define hobbit society.
The game’s visual presentation is nothing short of a sheer disappointment. The hobbits, who are supposed to look like charming rotund characters beloved from Tolkien’s descriptions and Jackson’s films, appear as disturbing ’80s troll dolls. The Shire is expected to capture the essence of the environment it represents, yet this time it lacks the vibrancy.
This visual poverty extends to character interactions, where dull, unappealing residents make the core gameplay loop of befriending villagers through shared meals feel more like a chore than a cozy social experience. The game attempts to capture hobbits’ dual nature as both loyal and petty, but the characterization feels flat rather than endearingly complex.
The “Tales” quest is to provide a charm and meaning into the mundane daily life of a hobbit. Unfortunately, cooking, being the most capturing act of the game, feels a genuine chore along with most activities devolving into repetitive fetch quests with minimal variation.
All of this leads to an uninterested and investment-free interaction of the players with the game. On top of this, the player faces very limited dialogue choices with restricted freedom to improvise, making interactions feel scripted rather than organic.
The tragedy does not lie in the ambitious setup or experimentation, but in the failure to execute it into a real and appealing concept. As the reports suggest, the joy killing bugs and unpolished components signals a rush either in development or delivery. For a game attempting to evoke the Shire’s legendary warmth and charm, these shortcomings prove particularly damaging to immersion.
Tales of the Shire occupies an uncomfortable middle ground that satisfies neither its target audiences. Lord of the Rings fans seeking rich storytelling and authentic Middle-earth atmosphere will find the dialogue uninspired and the world representation disappointing. Meanwhile, life simulation enthusiasts expecting depth comparable to games like Stardew Valley will encounter limited customization options and shallow gameplay variety.
