Apple’s has once again transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary, by giving your iPhone a pocket. But it’s not just a pocket, instead it’s the iPhone Pocket, which is the result of a collaboration between Apple and ISSEY MIYAKE. It is not exactly an accessory as it is a statement piece, it is a wearable unification of fashion and function.
In a groundbreaking partnership between Apple and ISSEY MIYAKE, they present iPhone Pocket, which is a delicate but profound accessory that is intended to restyle the way we carry our gadgets.
The iPhone Pocket features a singular 3D knitted production, which was inspired by ISSEY MIYAKE’s iconic “piece of cloth” philosophy, and it fuses the three aspects of workmanship, simplicity, and versatility into one refined shape.
Starting from Friday, November 14, the iPhone Pocket will be offered at certain Apple Store locations and on apple.com in France, Greater China, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, UK, and US.
The iPhone Pocket is inspired by ISSEY MIYAKE’s everlasting design principle, which is functional art that adapts to the person. The ribbed open form, which is similar to the brand’s characteristic pleats, lets the pocket grow and expand, thus it easily holds any iPhone model or other small things like AirPods or keys.
The material, when stretched, gives away its contents ever so slightly, letting the user view their iPhone’s display through the breathable knit. It has the ultimate flexibility, where the accessory can be handheld, attached to bags or worn right on the body and still will fit to any outfit and lifestyle.
The product range consists of eight colors for the short strap model, which is lemon, mandarin, purple, pink, peacock, sapphire, cinnamon, and black. It has three colors for the long strap model, which is sapphire, cinnamon, and black.
Every part of iPhone Pocket from its Japanese 3D-knitted form to the thoughtfully selected color palette was created through a close partnership of the Apple Design Studio and ISSEY MIYAKE’s research teams. They have transformed a trivial accessory into a deep meaning of technology as a fashion statement.
Yoshiyuki Miyamae, Design Director at MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO said,
“The design of iPhone Pocket speaks to the bond between iPhone and its user, while keeping in mind that an Apple product is designed to be universal in aesthetic and versatile in use.
iPhone Pocket explores the concept of ‘the joy of wearing an iPhone in your own way.’ The simplicity of its design echoes what we practice at ISSEY MIYAKE – the idea of leaving things less defined to allow for possibilities and personal interpretation.”
Molly Anderson, Apple’s Vice President of Industrial Design said,
“Apple and ISSEY MIYAKE share a design approach that celebrates craftsmanship, simplicity, and delight. This clever extra pocket exemplifies those ideas and is a natural accompaniment to our products. The color palette of iPhone Pocket was intentionally designed to mix and match with all our iPhone models and colors – allowing users to create their own personalized combination. Its recognizable silhouette offers a beautiful new way to carry your iPhone, AirPods, and favorite everyday items.”
The price for the iPhone Pocket short strap model is $149.95 (U.S.), and the long strap model is $229.95 (U.S.). The limited-edition collection will be available to customers for exploring, styling, and purchasing from November 14, both online and in-store.
Apple will offer the customers to mix and match the colors and lengths for their iPhone Pocket, proposing a creative and personalized way to carry everyday tech.
The iPhone Pocket is not an accessory, instead it is a design that speaks loudly of the fusion of progressing technology and fashion. By making a necessity into wearable art, Apple and ISSEY MIYAKE reminds us that the future of design is not only in innovation but also in simplicity, texture, and form.
Basically, the iPhone Pocket is not about storage but about storytelling. It narrates the story of Apple’s constant transition from a tech maker to a lifestyle creator. They have made a product that is both playful and functional, which is an affirmation that creativity can sometimes take the form of fabric and threads rather than just code.
