When it seemed that the time had finally come for Woody and Buzz to retire peacefully after all the adventures, Pixar came up with a plan to put them in the most horrible battle ground ever, which is the digital age. The new enemy is a lot more modern, attractive, and Wi-Fi connected.
After spending years escaping from the toy store, chaos in the kindergarten, and emotional suffering of growing up, finally Woody and his friends are fighting a very modern enemy, which is the tablet.
Disney and Pixar have presented the very first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5, and its message is quite clear and disturbing that “The age of toys is over”. The teaser gives a glimpse of a villain, Lilypad, who is a tablet in the shape of a frog with a voice of Greta Lee (Russian Doll, Tron: Ares). It symbolizes the increasing power of screens over the kids’ time to play.
Pixar’s latest teaser doesn’t share much when it comes to the plot, but it really doesn’t have to. Just the visuals are more than enough to communicate the message that the technology is now an enemy. The trailer is a fusion of humor and horror, Buzz Lightyears’ prospect of taking on the tablet is both ridiculous and quite true. It is a plot that reflects the concern of countless mothers and fathers around the globe, who are seeing their children change the old playtime for the new screen-time.
On top of all that madness, the comedian Conan O’Brien is going to voice the character of “Smarty Pants,” who is a very funny and a crazy toilet-training tech toy. He will probably serve to bring in some comic relief in this digital dystopia.
The previous year’s underperforming movie, Elio, which made only $21 million in its first weekend in the U.S, which is the lowest ever for Pixar, has led the studio to try and reclaim the territory of its past. The territory is to be filled with nostalgia and the good old trick of emotional intelligence.
It seems like Toy Story 5 is a strategically orchestrated move to win back the public and tap into their needs by offering the same legendary cast together with subjects commonly related to families. It also brings the critique of modern childhood, where it makes a relevant comment on the modernity of kids and their desires.
Toy Story 5 will be released on 19th June, 2026. This release is more than 30 years after the first digital Toy Story was made in 1996. Not only are very high hopes placed for another success of the Pixar studios, but also for a tale that harmonizes different age groups.
The teaser indicates that this is not going to be just another sequel, instead it is going to be a war of the imagination against innovations, and of childhood innocence against the temptations of technology.
Toy Story 5 is not only a nostalgic reunion but also a cultural turning point. Pixar appears to be ready to put the emotional spark back on, that has been disappearing in its recent films. Perhaps the real point is that toys, like stories, never die, they only progress.
Toy Story 5 might be pointing to something more than just a marketing stunt. It shows that even in a society who is addicted to advancement, there is still a place for the authenticity of children’s games. Woody and Buzz will come along to remind us what playing is all about, there is no need for a charging cable.
