Why This Google Employee Lives in a Truck in the Google’s Parking Lot?

SP’s: 23-year-old Brandon S. lives in a truck in Google’s parking lot and he’s saving tons of money. This idea struck him last summer when he was interning at Google and paying a great amount of money for the cheapest available housing option. Know his whole story here.

How’s the apartment rent in your city? I live in a major city and here it’s heavily overpriced. Well, here I’m going to tell you about a Google employee who’s living on a 128-square-foot truck and saving tons of money.

Yes, that’s right. 23-year-old Brandon S. lives in a truck in Google’s parking lot. He says that he opted out of settling into an overpriced San Fransisco apartment and took this decision.

This idea struck him last summer when he was interning at Google and he was living in the cheapest corporate housing offered: 2 bedrooms and 4 people for about $65 a night (roughly $2,000 a month).

Talking to BI, he says,”I realized I was paying an exorbitant amount of money for the apartment I was staying in – and I was almost never home.”

So, instead of throwing that amount of money on housing, he decided to get a 2006 Ford truck with 157,000 miles on it that costed him $10,000.

Now he’s living in his truck and saving about 90% of his income, while eating at the San Fransisco’s restaurants on weekends and paying off his student loans. At the weekdays, he eats breakfast, lunch and dinner at Google’s corporate campus. After working out, he showers for free every morning at Google’s gym. Google also pays his phone bills.

He only has to take care about one major expense – his truck insurance, which is about $121 per month.

“The main things that I have are a bed, a dresser, and I built a coat rack to hang up my clothes. Besides that, and a few stuffed animals, there’s pretty much nothing in there,” he tells BI.
