Meet Qualcomm’s Next-Gen Snapdragon Chips Behind 2027’s Biggest Android Phones

Qualcomm has launched two new flagship mobile chipset solutions for smartphones: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. These chips use the 2nm manufacturing process and will power upcoming premium Android smartphones. This new series focuses on on-device AI, gaming, camera, and connectivity. The Extreme Gen 6 sits at the top of the lineup, offering higher-end capabilities than the standard Gen 6.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6: What’s New

With the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series, Qualcomm has introduced two flagship chipsets. Both chips use the company’s next-generation Oryon CPU architecture and can reach speeds of up to 5GHz. The company has also reworked its Hexagon NPU to bring more AI processing directly to smartphones. Qualcomm says this setup delivers up to 35 percent higher NPU performance and up to 80 percent faster processing. The Qualcomm Sensing Hub further supports contextual AI tasks while using less power. The new platforms can also run AI models with large parameter counts, giving flagship phones more room for on-device AI workloads.

Qualcomm has positioned the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 as the more powerful chip in the new series. It packs two Prime Cores up to 5GHz and six Performance Cores up to 4GHz. The chipset also gets a larger shared memory pool, which targets more demanding tasks. Qualcomm has added dual Micro NPUs to its Sensing Hub for contextual AI processing. The company claims up to 85 percent higher performance and 20 percent better efficiency with this setup. Gaming also gets a new feature called Adreno Neural Fusion. It uses AI to improve frame generation and image quality during gameplay. The chipset can also support AI models with up to 200 billion parameters.

Gaming, Camera and Connectivity Features

Gaming gets an upgrade with Qualcomm’s newer Adreno GPU and its gaming-focused features. The new platforms also bring strong support for high-resolution cameras and video recording. They can handle up to 8K video recording at 60fps and camera sensors up to 320 megapixels. Qualcomm also supports Dolby Vision, Google Ultra HDR, HDR10, HDR10+, and Hybrid Log-Gamma. Both chipsets support UFS 5.0 storage alongside LPDDR5x RAM. For connectivity, they use the Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF System. This system supports peak 5G download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps. FastConnect 8800 supports Wi-Fi download speeds of up to 11.6Gbps. The chipsets also support Wi-Fi 8 and Bluetooth 6.

Qualcomm says several smartphone brands will use the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series. These brands include Honor, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, Redmi, RedMagic, Vivo and Xiaomi. The chipsets are expected to power upcoming premium Android smartphones from these companies. Some reports have also linked the chips with phones such as the OnePlus 16, iQOO 16, and Motorola Signature 27. However, manufacturers have not officially confirmed these chipset details for every model. Real-world performance differences between the two chips will become clearer once compatible phones hit the market.
