Nintendo is reviving its popular island life simulator with major upgrades. The company announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 Edition alongside a free Version 3.0 update on January 15, 2026. This is the first significant content expansion since Nintendo declared the 2021 update would be the game’s last.
The announcement positions Animal Crossing as a flagship title for Nintendo’s next-generation console, which launched in June 2025 to record-breaking sales. The Switch 2 Edition includes 4K resolution, mouse controls, and expanded multiplayer support.
The Switch 2 Edition brings technical improvements designed for Nintendo’s upgraded hardware. Visual quality receives a major boost with 4K resolution support when docked, though framerates stay at 30fps.
The game uses the Joy-Con 2’s mouse functionality for precise decorating, letting players arrange furniture and create custom designs with computer-like accuracy.
The standout feature revives the megaphone item from previous games. Players use the Switch 2’s microphone to call villagers’ names, and characters respond by moving toward the player’s voice. This shows Nintendo’s approach to weaving hardware capabilities into gameplay rather than treating them as add-ons.
Online features expand significantly, with 12-player sessions when everyone uses the Switch 2 Edition. CameraPlay integration enables players to connect USB cameras and display real-time reactions during multiplayer.
The free Version 3.0 update centers on a new resort hotel managed by Kapp’n’s family. Players help attract guests by decorating themed rooms and managing operations. The expansion includes a souvenir shop with exclusive furniture and clothing.
Quality-of-life improvements address player requests. Home storage increases from 5,000 to 9,000 items, with the ability to store trees, shrubs, and flowers. Resetti returns with a Reset Service, offering players an easy way to restructure islands without starting over.
Slumber Island represents the biggest addition for Nintendo Switch Online members. This feature allows players to design and save three separate islands with customizable layouts. Islands can be built collaboratively online, with full inventory access.
The update introduces crossover content. Nintendo items including the Ultra Hand and various console replicas can be collected. Nintendo Switch Online members gain extra functionality: interacting with console items unlocks playable classic NES, SNES, and Game Boy titles directly within the game.
LEGO collaboration items debut alongside themed content from The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon series via compatible amiibo.
Nintendo priced the Switch 2 Edition at .99 for new purchases, with physical and digital versions available. Existing players can access enhanced features through a .99 upgrade pack, available for pre-order through the My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop.
The announcement arrives as Nintendo strengthens its gaming hardware position. The Switch 2 reached 2 million U.S. sales within two months, outpacing its predecessor by 75 percent.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons itself represents one of Nintendo’s most successful titles, selling over 45 million copies since its March 2020 launch during pandemic lockdowns.
Whether this expansion signals renewed long-term support or a final farewell remains unclear. Nintendo’s 2021 statement declaring version 2.0 as the “final update” created expectations that active development had ended.
The reversal suggests either strategic timing with the Switch 2 launch or genuine commitment to extending the game’s lifespan. For millions of players who built thriving island communities, January 15 offers reason to return to long-abandoned shores.
