The video game industry offers several career opportunities beyond playing games. However, students, parents, and educators may not fully understand the roles involved in game development. Tencent has partnered with Cyberlite India to understand their views through a research program across four Indian cities. The study will explore what people know about gaming careers and what guidance young people need. The findings will be shared in a report titled How India Thinks About Gaming Careers.
The research program began in October 2026 and will bring together more than 100 participants. The meetings will be held in four Indian cities. The research company will hold 12 meetings in total. It will include four workshops with students, four focus groups with parents, and four focus groups with educators. One meeting will be conducted in each city for each focus group. Students will engage in game design activities during the workshop. They will learn about the various positions and skills needed to develop video games. Students will also prepare career guidance materials that address their questions and interests.
The teacher workshops will be about teachers’ perceptions of game developer careers. These workshops will also explore the connection between these careers and academic subjects and school activities. Teachers will discuss the materials they would like to use to help students choose these career paths. Meanwhile, the parent workshops will address families’ perceptions of gaming careers. Parents will share their questions, concerns, and expectations about this sector. The research team will compare the results obtained from students, parents, and educators. This will help identify their shared concerns and different perspectives.
In addition to the research, Tencent will support three special episodes of Game On. It is an established YouTube series produced with youth platform Yuvaa. The upcoming edition will also involve Games for Change India and Eight Goals One Foundation (8one). The episodes will feature digital creators and young people alongside video game developers, industry experts, and parents. Their discussions will focus on the professional roles behind video games. The series will also use gameplay to make these conversations more engaging. It aims to address common questions from young people and families about careers in gaming.
India has one of the largest gaming markets globally. As per Niko Partners, there were about 511 million gamers in India in 2025. As the industry continues to grow, it will need more skilled professionals. The government also recognized this demand in the 2026-27 Union Budget, which highlighted the need to develop talent across the AVGC sector. The AVGC industry could require nearly two million professionals by 2030. The government also proposed introducing Content Creator Labs in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges. These labs would help develop talent in creative areas. Tencent’s partnership with Cyberlite India supports this effort. The research will explore how students, parents, and teachers view gaming careers. It will also identify the information they need to understand and explore these opportunities.
Tencent recently participated as a leading sponsor at the India Game Developers Conference (IGDC) 2026. Alongside Cyberlite India, it also facilitated a discussion about the gaming industry’s potential and emerging career paths. Through these initiatives, Tencent aims to support India’s AVGC-XR talent ecosystem and contribute to the growth of its Orange Economy.
